Size reduction as the name suggests is the process of reducing larger solid masses into smaller units like particles or grains. This is done by the addition of energy to the material to help break it up into smaller particles. The equipment that helps with this process is called the Size Reduction Equipment.
A number of size reduction equipment exist. Every equipment goes about the process differently and the size the particle gets reduced to also differs. For example, a roller mill reduces the size of the material to 20 to 200 mesh. It does this by compression of the mass. Another equipment, Edge Runner Mill, reduces the material to a size of 20 to 30 microns. It does this by attrition and impact. 
The uses of these types of equipment vary depending on the particle it gives. A roller mill is used for soft materials whereas the Edge Runner Mill is more suitable for moderately hard and friable material.

Size reduction techniques are used in a number of industries, namely, biotech, pharmaceutical, cosmetics industry, etc. 

Size reduction by itself involves a number of benefits. It helps improve the shelf life of the product. It also gives a better appearance, texture, and taste to the final product.

These advantages vary from industry to industry. In the Chemical Industry, size reduction helps increase the surface conductivity, gives the product smoother surface quality, and allows higher particle packing. It also increases the overall quality of the product. Some examples of such products are pastes, ink dispersions, adhesives, etc.

For the pharmaceutical industry, the particle size reduction helps the drug perform more efficiently. It increases the absorption and uptake of the drug in the body. Uniform particle size results in better oral bioavailability which in turn increases the drug’s efficacy.

Clearly, a piece of equipment that allows us to achieve all this has several advantages.

  • The use of the appropriate size reduction equipment allows the generation of uniform particle size. 
  • It also helps increase the overall surface area or viscosity of the material. 
  • This increase in surface area results in a higher rate of absorption. Smaller the particle, greater is the absorption. Better the size reduction equipment, smaller is the particle. 

Steps are being taken by industries to make the modern size reduction equipment more energy efficient. It’s important to choose the wrong equipment for your use. The choice of the right equipment is detrimental. It may do more harm than good.
