Most of the protein in households comes from farms selling chicken, turkey, and pork. In order to produce such products, farms need to store a lot of food for these animals. This food is mostly stored in feed mills, which receive grains and other products that are mixed together to produce meals, which is then shipped to these farms. Feed mills store the grains in storage silos, which are filled using bucket elevators. In order to save costs and reduce the number of equipment in the farm, a single bucket elevator can be used to fill two storage silos. This task required a diverter valve attached to the bucket elevator, which can act as a switch between two storage silos. One silo is closed when the other one is getting filled and vice-versa. This mechanism helps in averting cross-contamination.
A diverter valve directs bulk solids like grains into different destinations as part of a pneumatic conveying system. In short, these valves are used when there is one source but two destinations (or reverse). Good diverter valves are made out of steel plates, with special shaft seals. While fabricating these diverter valves, a single weldment procedure is used to minimize the chances for material or dust to escape outside. In a diverter valve, a pneumatically actuated plate with wiper (a plate which can be moved with air pressure) is mounted on a pivot shaft, which allows the material flow to one of the two openings while the other opening is closed. This simplicity in design helps in keeping the mill to maintain a lean structure with minimum wastage of energy, money, and time.
Some of the good diverter plates are fitted with neoprene rubber wipers and UHMW slide plates. These provide a firm seal with the housing and at the same time promote material flow. With time, some of the parts of diverter valves can wear out but those parts can be replaced through a bolted access door located on the side of the diverter housing. Some of the diverter valve kits also use advanced sensor technologies like proximity sensors. These proximity sensors can sense the diverter plate position in real-time and provide this information to the operator. This level of sophistication in a diverter valve can further ensure the correctness of material in two different storage silos with minimum error.
